Petition on Steroids!

The e-petition has already gotten 6000 signatures in less than 3 days! This obviously attests to the depth of concern over these regulations. If you haven’t yet, please sign the petition and tell your friends to do the same. You’ll be joining the likes of Michael Stipe, Patti Smith, Larry Fink, John Cameron Mitchell, Barbara Kopple, St. Clair Bourne, Jennie Livingston, Albert Maysles, producers from 60 Minutes, Sesame Street, MTV, VH1, Court TV and more, and photo editors from Magnum, Getty, USA Today, Time Magazine, Fortune Magazine, and Forbes.

    As a New Yorker that carries at least one camera with me at all times, I am very curious as to just how the mayor’s new law would be enfoced. Is he going to add a new arm to the NYPD that will be patrolling the streets with stopwatch in hand, ready to single photographers and filmmakers out in order to start the 30 minute timing process? What if, for some reason a particular location draws twenty or thirty or more people wishing to shoot photos or film at the same time. Will there be enough monitors to “fairly” keep track of the time, or will they be forced to limit the number of people that can create images in one place to a reduced number that they feel they can control? This sounds very much like the beginnings of communist control of our streets.

    Lets do our best to make sure that this NEVER happens. This city has so much to offer in terms of visual images. It would be a terrible shame if we were forced to live under this type of control.

    Thanks so much for your efforts and for fighting the good fight. I just wanted to let you know that many of us are trying to raise our voices and add our names to the petition but there seems to be a technical snafu…it won’t allow you to sign when you click the add entry button. It does dispaly the thousands of signatures that have already poured in but does not allow for additions. Just wanted to give you a heads up and let you know that once it gets up and running again that your signatures may well double. Great work and fantastic rallying of forces.

    Thanks for getting this petition organized. I live near Ithaca and in Ohio. I sent the petition on to many people I know whom I think will want to help stop this outrageous ordinance. Please put me on a mailing list to keep me updated and let me know what else I can do to help.
