I am apalled and offended by such a suggestion that I now would need a permit to do anything. My life revolves around photography and cinema. It is bad enough that the city takes so much out of artists and “regular” people from the price of housing, to electricity, let’s not forget the extortion that is being committed everyday by Mayor Bloomberg’s minions over at the impound yard. What on earth can this possibly do to benefit the city?! This is wrong, if you take away art from the city, which will hppen if this permit requirement is passed, then New York City no longer has any value. New York is the leader in what defines American Culture if we take that away then we have nothing.

Dear commisioner, Its understandable that you would wish to know that the safety of nyc residents is assured. However, the legislation that requires film makers to have one million dollars of liability insurance is very oppresive. Documentary production should be excluded from this law, due to the nature of its subject matter. When there are abuses against children, or emergency that should be shared with the masses only a documentarian can tell the real story. If you should ignore this request and treat all film makers as if they are trying to make millions from thier work, then you will silence a voice in NYC that will allow many stories to be left un told. NY1, CBS, ABC, etc are not always in the business of telling the whole truth. You must allow documentary to get the same treatment that they receive in copyright law, which is the freedom to share truth with the masses.
sincerely,

$1 million of insurance to record video?? How insane! I can’t even afford a cheap camcorder, much less to pay $1 million for the right to use it! How dare they oppress people this way! How many of us regular people are there with digital cameras and video cameras who love to casually take pictures and record video just for the fun of it?!?! How dare they take it away from us!!

Just added your banner to my links page. I’m originally from NYC & photograph it often. Our rights are only as strong as “WE THE PEOPLE” make them.
